日本とボストンは互いに何を学べるか、そして未来に向けてどのような価値を共に創造することができるか
日本政府は2022年を「スタートアップ創出元年」と位置付け、「スタートアップ育成５か年計画」を策定する方針を打ち出しました。官民含めあらゆるセクターにおいてスタートアップやイノベーションに対する注目は過去にないほど高まっています。
これまで起業分野において注目されてきたのはソフトウェアを中心に発展してきたシリコンバレーでした。他方、日本は、ToyotaやSonyに代表されるように、ロボティクスや電子、ライフサイエンスなどハードテック/ ディープテックと呼ばれる分野に強みを持っています。現在、米国においてMITとハーバードという2つの巨大な研究型大学のお膝元でそういったハードテック/ ディープテックの領域において世界をリードするエコシステムはボストンです。また、ボストンはビジネスマン、研究者、学生など多くの日本人が行き来をし、人的・文化的交流も密接な地域です。

What Can Japan and Boston Learn from Each Other and What Value Can We Create Together for the Future?
The enthusiasm on startups and innovation has never been greater in Japan. To name a few, investment in startups reached a record high of nearly 800 billion yen and the Japanese government announced that they would formulate a “Five-Year Startup Development Plan.
Historically, the focus of attention in the area of entrepreneurship has been on Silicon Valley, which has developed mainly in the area of software. Japan, on the other hand, has strengths in what is called “hard tech/deep tech,” such as robotics, electronics, and life sciences, as exemplified by Toyota and Sony. Currently, Boston is the world’s leading ecosystem for hard/deep tech in the U.S., home to two large research universities, MIT and Harvard. Boston is also a region where many Japanese business people, researchers, and students come and go, and where human and cultural exchange is very close.
In this session, we invite Tim Rowe, founder of CIC/ Venture Café, and guests who know Boston deeply and are at the forefront of innovation, to explore the possibilities of collaboration between Boston and Japan. Please join us!
